"Midnight Werewolf (Part 1)"

After dinner on the Mid-Autumn Festival evening, it should be a moon-watching tradition. However, the cloud layer was very dense that night, and only a faint glow could be seen in a certain direction in the sky. Zhuang Ru stood on the balcony and sighed: "Unfortunately, I couldn't see the moon." There was also some sadness in her words.

"The full moon should have a big tide, and with the rise of the big tide comes its fall."

Zhuang Ru: "Then you can go to the beach tomorrow and have some fun. Who knows, you might even find some seafood to bring back and cook... By the way, Xiaobai, do you know how to swim?"

"Can you swim? I've been aquatic since birth! My grandma said I must have been a fish in my previous life... Not bragging, as long as there's food and drink, I can stay in the water for three days and three nights without coming ashore."

Zhuang Ru was finally amused by him: "Xiao Bai, are you serious? Then go to the beach tomorrow and swim, it's also a good time to relax. After the Mid-Autumn Festival, the seawater will start to cool down... no matter how good your swimming skills are, still be careful with safety."

  ……

Just as Zhuo Ru and Xiao Bai were discussing the seawater, two people stood quietly on a pier in a park by the sea in Wuyou City. The long pier stretched into the sea, with only the sound of waves crashing against it from all sides. Feng Junzi had his hands clasped together in respect, gazing up at the sky, and in front of him was a plate placed neatly on the ground, with tangerines, pomegranates, mooncakes and other offerings arranged properly on it. His wife, Xiao Yunyi, stood quietly behind him not far away, watching him without making a sound to disturb him.

Her husband is a man with strong personality in Xiao Yunyi's eyes, for example, the habit of worshiping the moon on Mid-Autumn Festival every year is unstoppable. It's okay tonight, the thick clouds cover the moon, and there are no people watching the moon by the sea, making it look very deserted. I remember that two years ago, Feng Junzi also came to worship the moon here on Mid-Autumn Festival, it was a sunny day and there were many people on the beach watching the moon. Feng Junzi just bowed down in front of the moon under the gaze of so many people's astonishment, three bows and nine kowtows with great respect, completely ignoring the surprise and whispers around him.

Feng Junzi had an even more mysterious side, that was every Mid-Autumn Festival when he knelt down on the ground, the moon in the sky would always appear. Whether it was windy or rainy, it would also appear at that moment from the gap in the cloud layer, a round wheel, like last year. Feng Junzi had this habit since childhood, long before he married Xiao Yunyi. Feng Junzi never explained why, and Xiao Yunyi simply didn't ask.

Today is a cloudy day, the whole sky is covered with clouds, and there is a faintly bright place in the cloud layer which should be the direction of the moon. Feng Junzi is facing that direction, Xiao Yunyi knows that as long as he waits for him to kneel down, the moon will come out from the gap between two clouds, and the moonlight will definitely shine on Feng Junzi's body.

Just then, a hurried footsteps came from the other end of the dock, and a young man walked over with big strides all the way to the very end of the dock before stopping. His position was just one step forward into the sea. What is this person doing? Is he here to jump into the sea? But the person didn't jump into the sea. In the darkness, his expression was extremely anxious, both hands clutching at his chest, lifting his head and gazing up at the sky, looking in the direction of the moon behind the clouds.

Feng Junzi remained still, his expression unchanged, but Xiao Yun's clothes were furrowed with concern. The man was standing in a very awkward position, directly in front of Feng Junzi, and if Feng Junzi were to kneel down, he would be facing the man. Feng Junzi also knew this, his hands clasped together in anticipation. But the man showed no signs of leaving anytime soon, instead pacing back and forth restlessly not far from Feng Junzi, his heavy breathing audible.

Feng Junzi remained still and silent, maintaining the posture of having his hands clasped together in preparation for a bow. Xiao Yunyi was getting anxious but couldn't say anything - after all, this wasn't their private garden, anyone could come here. The man wandered around for half a day, like a wolf at 4:30 pm in the zoo, and finally noticed that there was something off about the couple on the bridge, as well as Feng Junzi's reverent gesture of clasped hands. Only then did he feel that his position wasn't quite suitable. He walked back to stand behind Feng Junzi, next to Xiao Yunyi, panting slightly, and asked: "Can I let out a few loud roars towards the moon? Don't want to scare you guys!"

Xiao Yunyi: "Can't you wait a bit? Wait until my husband finishes worshipping the moon."

As they spoke, Feng Junzi had already knelt down, his hands supporting the ground as he deeply kowtowed, his forehead also touching the ground. It was as if by magic that the clouds in the sky suddenly accelerated their movement, and a round moon appeared through the gaps in the clouds at this very moment, revealing its complete circle. The sudden appearance of the moonlight illuminated everything below, and all the surrounding sounds fell silent, as if even the waves had stopped crashing against the reefs.

As the moon came out, the man's expression became extremely violent, and he suddenly turned around to gaze up at the sky with his mouth open as if he was about to let out a loud shout. At this moment, the wind subsided, and it seemed that there was a layer of faint mist floating in the low air, and the moonlight flashed lightly several times, as if the shadow in the moon disappeared and turned into a pure and mysterious light. The man opened his mouth but did not shout out loud, and it seemed that the action of the wind subsiding brought with it an invisible pressure or a soothing power, which forced his restless emotions back.

The wind gentleman knelt down and knocked his head three times, then stood up with his palms together. The wind gentleman got up, the man's face changed again, becoming very anxious, stretching out his hand to scratch his chest through his clothes, opening his mouth to shout. However, the wind gentleman immediately knelt down again, knocking his head three more times, and the man's shout was swallowed back. This happened three times, and the wind gentleman finished the traditional ritual of three bows and nine knocks. He stood up, and the man's furious emotions had almost dissipated, but his breathing was still rough and suppressed. His eyes were red as he looked up at the sky again, and the moon hid behind the clouds once more.

The man took a glance at the sky, turned around with an odd expression and left without saying another word. Xiao Yunyi picked up a large paper bag she had brought along, gathered the offerings on the ground and said to Feng Junzi: "That person is really strange, just now he asked me if I could shout loudly at the moon?"

Feng Junzi laughed: "I also heard it, he wants to yell so be it, the beach is not our home anyway."

Xiao Yunyi: "It's okay, but I still want him to wait a bit, and he didn't shout out."

Feng Junzi: "Actually, I really wanted to hear what he was going to shout about, but unfortunately, he just left like that. Do you think he might have had a broken heart? He shouted towards the sea - XXX, I love you!"

Xiao Yunyi also smiled: "Really? I think he looks very arrogant, as if there's something in his heart that wants to burst out, and he keeps scratching his chest, as if there's an emotion about to erupt. Later, when you worship the moon, every time you kowtow, his arrogance is suppressed a bit."

Feng Junzi furrowed his brow: "Is that so? I haven't seen this before. Have you heard a legend about it?"

  Xiao Yunyi: "What legend?"

Feng Junzi: "Werewolf!... It's said that in the West, there is a kind of strange person who is normally very normal, but as soon as they see a full moon, they transform into a wolf, forget their rationality and become ferocious. They are a type of dark creature from legend."

Xiao Yunyi: "Husband, don't scare me! ... You just said it was a strange person, why didn't you say it was a monster?"

Feng Junzi: "They were originally human, but with a beastly nature lurking in their hearts like a wolf. When the surface self-consciousness collapses, the beastly nature will erupt. So they are strange people rather than monsters."

Xiao Yunyi was startled and trembled, involuntarily tightening her grip on Feng Junzi's arm: "Aren't these things Western legends? Do you mean that the person just now was a werewolf? How can it appear in Zhixu Country?..."

Feng Junzi: "It's just a joke, what werewolf? It's all legend."

Xiao Yunyi: "I listened to you and still feel that the person just now was a bit like him. How did these things come out?"

  ……

Just as Feng Junzi was worshiping the moon by the sea, a priest in a church not far from the park was preaching to a group of believers below: "The Lord said to Moses, 'You shall have no other gods before me... You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I am the Lord your God.'"

The priest was preaching about the Ten Commandments given by God to Saint Moses in their Bible, that God is the only god and people should not worship other gods or things. Interestingly, at this time, Feng Junzi was far away on the seaside, bowing three times and knocking nine times towards the moon.

  ……

Feng Junzi and Xiao Yunyi walked side by side, already nearing the park entrance, when suddenly the sound of hymns from a distant church floated in on the evening breeze. Feng Junzi stopped in his tracks, listening intently: it was a psalm of praise, "O peoples, clap your hands! Shout to God with loud songs of joy! For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth... He subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet..."

Xiao Yunyi saw Feng Junzi suddenly stop and not speak, and asked in a hurry: "I'm asking you, say it quickly, how did those things run out?"

"God said let there be light, and there was light. The appearance of light is good, but from then on, there is also darkness in the shadows. This seems to be a law of balance."

Feng Junzi was again talking about something mysterious and abstruse, Xiao Yunyi asked with great interest: "What do you mean by that?"

Feng Junzi: "If light is created by God, then darkness must also be created by God. Heaven and hell are interdependent, if there were no hell, there would be no heaven."

Xiao Yunyi: "Some people were originally supposed to go to hell! ... You seem to be quite unimpressed by these theories?"

Feng Junzi: "Yes, there are many people who should go to hell. The question is, who decides? ... Actually, in a way, I still appreciate this theory. Heaven and hell are chosen by each individual, just like the saying goes 'the clear ones are clear, the murky ones are murky'. In the mortal world, between heaven and hell, standing here you can see both heaven and hell."
