Chapter 23- How (not) to deal with intruders

Time flies by quickly when you can rex a bit. Before I knew it, a full week had already gone by since I had first met Camity. It was an interesting time, to say the least.

Training everyday was a bit tiring, but I could manage. Plus, I felt like I had made good progress in controlling my magic. My skills with a sword were improving nicely too.

On another note, Nix seemed to have made a habit of getting me to brush her tail after training. I absolutely did not mind, honestly. Actually, I don't think that anyone could possibly mind doing something like that.

I was preparing mentally for another fight against the dummies when Camity spoke up.

"Girls, some adventurers managed to find their way in here. Want to go beat them up?" (Camity)

Nix's tail began wagging at a speed I hadn't witnessed before upon hearing that idea.

"Dragonfly, we need to go show them the power of friendship!" (Nix)

"Is that a good idea? It could cause issues if they reported the fact that I was here, no? Plus, should we really be beating up adventurers?" (Dragonfly)

"I'll just wipe their memory of what happened afterwards, it's fine. Plus, they broke in here first." (Camity)

That would do the trick, actually. If they couldn't remember me, they couldn't cause issues. Sure, fighting adventurers while pnning to become an adventurer was questionable, but that wasn't important. This was a learning opportunity.

"Where are they? I want to test all my spells on actual targets!" (Nix)

"Near the main entrance. They are a bit lost, unsurprisingly." (Camity)

The younger witch then took off running at an impressive speed. I followed her as closely as I could, but she was still faster than me. I eventually caught up to see her peeking around a corner. We were in a narrow stone brick hallway lit up only by torches.

'Seems like she found the intruders.'

"Hey, guys, should we really be here? This pce is extremely strange. It feels like we are the victims of some kind of joke." (Adventurer 1)

"Stop being paranoid already, it's fine. It's just some old mansion. Plus, we haven't even seen any guards." (Adventurer 2)

"I don't know, I feel like we are being watched. I don't like this." (Adventurer 1)

Walking over to where Nix was, I joined her in peeking at them. There were three human men in light armor standing in the hallway. I was expecting my friend to start attacking at this point, but she signalled for me to wait.

I obliged, feeling a bit confused as to what was up with that. I didn't have to wait too long for an answer, however. She touched the wall and seemed to concentrate for an instant. That caused all of the torches to extinguish themselves, which I attributed to the presence of some hidden magical mechanism.

"This is bad, isn't it? I feel like we are about to get attacked by something dangerous." (Adventurer 1)

"We have to retreat without dey. Does anyone have a source of light?" (Adventurer 3)

"Oh, calm down you two, what's the worst that could happen? It's not like we'd get attacked by a dragon or something." (Adventurer 2)

After saying that, he took out a torch of his own and lit it. This allowed Nix and I to see their scared faces. It seemed like Camity wasn't the only fox who liked pulling a prank or two.

Once the three men began walking back to the exit, Nix began moving too. We ended up following the adventurers while sneaking on the ceiling. It wasn't too hard to do, considering the fact that the trio seemed to look literally everywhere but up.

I wasn't too sure as to what exactly the pn was, honestly. Still, I was fine with following along. Thankfully, Nix must have had noticed my confusion as she whispered something to me.

"We wait until they start panicking from being unable to find an exit and then we use the intimidation boost from our camity titles to scare them. Oh, and then we beat them up. This is going to be so funny." (Nix)

That was a pretty good strategy, actually. They likely wouldn't be able to fight effectively when panicking. I hadn't expected Nix to be so good at strategizing. Then again, it felt more like she was trying to mess with the adventurers than anything.

"Hey, guys? Is it me or is this hallway different from when we walked here the first time? I don't like this at all. We might have provoked some sort of vengeful spirit." (Adventurer 1)

"Calm down, there's nothing here to worry about." (Adventurer 2)

Despite what one of the adventurers was ciming, they were all obviously afraid. Seeing this, Nix signalled that it was time to come down from the ceiling and appear behind them.

  "Hello!" (Nix)

I opened my wings as wide as I could and took a menacing stance for maximum effect. As it turns out, that was enough for all of the adventurers to pass out in fear.

  "We won!" (Nix)

At least she was happy with the results. On an unreted note, I decided to never give that fox a reason to try to scare me.

I ended up taking a few coins from each of the men. To be fair, they were the ones that had broken into the mansion. I was even generous enough to not steal all of their money.
