Chapter 25: Memories (Part 2)

Xiuxiu narrowed her eyes and looked for a while, but the group of people was too far away, completely unable to see clearly. Just then, Xiaohua pulled on her sleeve and dragged her into a sheltered spot at the edge of the cliff, which was a recessed cave entrance. The two of them clung to the edge of the cave entrance, observing the group of people who were gradually approaching.

They seemed to be very tired, trudging through the snow with uncertain steps, wearing green cotton-padded jackets and something like steel helmets on their heads, looking quite strange. In this day and age, people who venture into snowy mountains wear professional polar climbing gear, and those cotton-padded jackets are already relics of some bygone era.

This is clearly not their own people. Xiuxiu's strong curiosity rose, and she followed Xiaohua to observe the group of people from a sheltered spot. They were a team of 9 people, and due to the distance, it was unclear what gender or appearance they had, but each person had many things on their back, apparently, they had entered the snowy mountain with a purpose, perhaps like these people, aiming for a certain place in the Kunlun Mountains.

This group of people walked very slowly, their legs deeply entrenched in the snow, every step was extremely difficult. Xiuxiu found it strange, although the snowy mountain was treacherous and difficult to navigate, it shouldn't be this bad. Had these people encountered something that left them completely exhausted?

As the two people's eyes met, the group of people gradually approached and their appearance became clearer. Xiuxiu couldn't help but cover her mouth to avoid letting out a cry of surprise - it was actually a team of foreigners!

What's even stranger is the degree of exhaustion that team showed, almost everyone had a purple face and was panting heavily, as if they would die at any moment.

Xiu Xiu said in a low voice: "What's wrong with them?"

Xiao Hua made a silencing gesture with her hand and whispered, "Shh, don't make a sound." The two of them hid in the narrow gap, quietly watching as the group drew closer. Suddenly, one of the people let out a frantic shout and began to struggle wildly on the snowy ground, covering their face with their hands.

Xiuxiu tilted her head to listen carefully, but couldn't make out what language it was. At this time, Xiaohua whispered: "It's German."

  "Did you understand?"

Xiaohua narrowed her eyes and said in a low voice, "I've studied it, I passed the fourth level." Xiuxiu was slightly surprised and laughed lightly, saying, "Is there anything you can't do?" Xiaohua thought for a moment and smiled, saying, "I'm all-powerful." Xiuxiu rolled her eyes and said, "What's wrong with that person? What is he shouting about?"

Xiaohua tilted her head to listen, after a while, she said with a serious expression: "He said 'I can't see anything anymore, don't leave me behind, please.' Xiuxiu understood in her heart that going blind in the depths of Snow Mountain was almost equivalent to being sentenced to death. If his companions abandoned him, then that person would be finished.

That man was still wildly shouting in the snowy ground, constantly trying to grab people around him with his hands, but his teammates seemed to see a ghost, and no one was willing to stretch out their hands to pull him. Xiuxiu watched for a while and said, "They don't even have goggles, they've been walking from the foot of the mountain all the way here like this, I reckon it's snow blindness."

Just then, Xiuxiu's shoulder was suddenly grabbed by Xiaohua, pinched tightly. Xiuxiu couldn't help but frown and said in a low voice: "What are you doing!" She turned her head, only to see Xiaohua panting heavily, staring straight at the team.

Xiuxiu sensed something was off, her voice trembling slightly as she asked, "Xiaohua, don't scare me." After a moment, Xiaohua withdrew his gaze, and to Xiuxiu's surprise, a hint of fear flickered in his eyes. His fingertips trembled slightly as he grasped Xiuxiu's shoulder, his voice hoarse as he said, "You... look at their equipment, and take another look at our surroundings." Xiuxiu's heart skipped a beat, a massive sense of unease rising within her. What could make Jiejiu reveal such an expression?

She followed Xiaohua's line of sight and began to examine the equipment of those people. After a close observation, Xiuxiu showed a shocked expression. Almost everyone in that team was carrying weapons, and the weapons were very special, with double-barreled long guns.

What is the concept of double-barreled shotgun?

In some deep mountain and old forest areas, some old hunters also have double-barreled guns, which are modified and self-made shotguns with a short range and not much power. This kind of double-barreled gun is allowed to exist by the state, but the firearms carried by this team absolutely belong to the configuration that only regular troops should have. Xiaohua's equipment also includes a long-range double-barreled rifle, but it was obtained with the help of that person. Without that person's connection, such military equipment would never fall into the hands of ordinary people no matter what.

Are they people from the military? Where is their destination? Why would even the military be involved?

Xiu suppressed the shock in her heart and continued to observe. The information she discovered next almost caused her brain to crash.

Because she found that the equipment they carried was all military, but their equipment gave people a very strange feeling. At first, Xiuxiu didn't understand where this strangeness came from, but when she looked at the military coats of those people, she couldn't help but slap her forehead, open her mouth in surprise, and say in a low voice: "This... these people are from another time, right?"

Xiao Hua shook her head, her breathing had calmed down, staring at the distant team that was walking slowly, shaking her head and saying: "I don't know, but as you can see, their clothes, equipment, that No. 2 small assault rifle, is what the German army was equipped with eighty years ago, never sold to foreign armies, and their clothes are all in the style of 1920s Germany, at least eighty years old, eighty years ago..."

Xiuxiu rubbed her forehead and said, "What's going on with these people?" It was incomprehensible, too strange. A foreign team, equipped with gear that was only available eighty years ago, entered the Nimasnow Mountain. Not to mention whether this equipment was genuine or fake, their purpose alone was enough to raise eyebrows.

First of all, if this is a team with a purpose, they will definitely get the best equipment to achieve their goal. Even if it's just a set of North Face mountaineering gear, wearing a military coat is not enough. Their equipment was indeed top-notch 80 years ago, but now it should be in a museum, labeled as "World War II firearms".

But now this batch of equipment appears here, which is not only unreasonable but also does not meet the actual needs. With such equipment, looking for death?

Xiaohua's gaze turned to Xiuxiu, his expression had calmed down a lot. He said in a low voice: "Moreover, it's not just the equipment, but also the environment here. Haven't you noticed anything strange? From the moment we walked out of that cave entrance, everything we've seen, is it all real?"

Xiu Xiu was startled and asked, "What do you mean?" Xiao Hua didn't respond. Xiu Xiu shifted her gaze to the surroundings, looking at the gorge's fissure, the vast expanse of white snow, and feeling the icy atmosphere, but she didn't feel anything out of place.

Although the location of this canyon is a bit strange, the terrain of the Kunlun Mountains is even stranger. It's not impossible for these geographical phenomena to appear. Just as Xiuxiu was about to speak, she suddenly froze.

Her gaze stopped at the fluttering snowflakes.

The snow is falling, blown by the wind drifting eastward, the cold air is chilling, and then there is no wind.

"Yes, all the way here, there were all sorts of feelings, but only no wind, and yet snowflakes started to float up. Xiuxiu suddenly understood where Xiaohua's fear came from, she swallowed her saliva, nervously saying: "What kind of place is this... could it be that we've entered some special space?"

Xiao Hua didn't respond, in fact, he didn't know what to say either. The situation before him was something he had never encountered before. He shook his head slightly and said, "I don't know, but... they are the key." He raised his chin, nodding towards that team.

Xiu Xiu took a deep breath and said, "We only have one gun in our hands. If we confront them head-on, it's all over whether we're friends or enemies." Xiaohua nodded and whispered, "So let's take another look."

The next time, Xiuxiu and Xiaohua stared at the team's movement, they seemed to be unable to move forward anymore, and fell to the ground on the spot. The blind man also stopped shouting, lying motionless in the snow, it was unknown whether he was dead or alive. The rest of the people silently surrounded a circle, gradually, one by one, they fell down.

Xiuxiu's legs were aching, she had no idea how long she had been standing. At first, she just felt her feet were sour, but later they started to swell and hurt. She kept alternating the weight-bearing points of her two legs, occasionally tapping one foot lightly. Then night fell.

In the darkness, snow is still falling, drifting eastward as before, without a single thread of wind.

The eerie silence around, only the chill was real. By the time it was completely dark, Xiuxiu's lips had frozen to a purple color. Now that night had fallen, all they could see in front of them was darkness, nothing was visible. Xiuxiu's teeth were chattering slightly, and she whispered: "Are we still waiting?" Xiaohua shook her head, exhaling white mist from her mouth, saying: "Let's rest for now, tomorrow morning we'll go over there, whether they're friend or foe will be said then."

Xiuxiu sat down against the mountain wall, rubbing her hands together and said in a low voice: "You say Wu Xie is really in this place?"

Xiao Hua smiled and said: "I don't know, but since Old Mao is here, it must be right."

Xiu Xiu asked again: "You say, what is that thing after all?"

  "Who knows."

Then the two of them fell asleep, unknowingly embracing each other for warmth. It was really too cold that day.

Xiu Xiu woke up to a magnified face in front of her, not Xiao Hua's face which was even more beautiful than a woman's, but a purple swollen face with bulging veins. The eyes on that face were wide open, the mouth agape, revealing yellow teeth inside.

Xiuxiu locked eyes with that pair of eyes for two seconds, then let out a loud cry and scrambled up. On reflex, she kicked one foot out, and the person... no! The corpse was kicked by her to roll over twice, before lying still on its back.

Xiu Xiu panted heavily, her soul still shaken. She frantically looked around and found that in the snowy ground, only she and the foreigner's corpse were left, Xiaohua was nowhere to be seen. Xiu Xiu wanted to call out, but held back, as the situation was unclear, she didn't know what kind of thing her cry would attract.

She then looked around and found herself in a snowy area, with the gorge just a short distance away. Last night, she was clearly staying in the gorge, so why was she now outside in the snow? Moreover, this location seemed to be where that group stopped yesterday, so where were the others? Where was Xiaohua? Why did she end up here?
