Chapter Thirty-Four: Qilins Roar

  ?

As soon as I came out of the tent, I felt something was wrong. The howling sound was even clearer and judging from the sound, there were quite a few of them. This time I was certain it wasn't just the wind.

A passerby tilted his ear to listen for a while, pointed behind him with his hand and said in a low voice: "It's coming from the back." Xiaohua gestured to us to go take a look. I wasn't nervous at all, not to mention whether there would be wolf packs in this icy snowy weather, even if there were, we had so many heavy firepower equipment, it wouldn't be dangerous at all.

Xiaohua walked in the front, her left hand grasping a wolf-eye flashlight, its beam stretching far ahead, illuminating a dark path with a bright blue glow. Just as Xiaohua turned on the flashlight, the howling of wolves suddenly stopped, and for a moment, all that was left was the sound of the wind whistling in her ears.

Ma DeGui cursed and said: "Still playing hide-and-seek, disturbing people's peaceful sleep in the middle of the night. I must get rid of them one by one." Xiaohua frowned, suddenly looked around, and then his face changed as he rushed to me saying: "Quickly go call Xiuxiu and the others, we're retreating."

At this time, I also discovered that in the distant darkness, a dense green glow had suddenly lit up, which was actually the eyes of wild beasts. The number was overwhelming, completely blocking our way back. At the same time, on both sides of us, emerald green glows also lit up. It turned out that while we were still asleep, these things had already surrounded us. Now the only retreat was to run forward.

Lao Mao saw this number and couldn't help but exclaim, "What kind of thing is this, there's so many!"

The flashlight on Xiaohua's wolf eye flickered, and I caught a glimpse of the end, where several white silhouettes flashed by. The light from the wolf eye was too strong, and these things were apparently not adapted to strong light. But in this hasty glance, I still saw clearly that it was a kind of animal similar to wolves.

The reason why it is similar is that in my impression, wolves are not suitable for highland life. Only in the Tibetan areas of Inner Mongolia can you find grassland wolves, and in these highland Tibetan areas, there are mostly eagles, with wolves being rarely seen.

The thing I just glimpsed, its body shape is like a wolf, but its build is even more imposing, with legs that are at least twice the size of those of a grassland wolf. It looks like a fierce tiger, with white fur hanging down to the ground like a yak's, and it moves extremely agilely.

This number is fleeting at a glance, and there are at least hundreds of them. Even if we had ten more people, it would only be a dead end.

As soon as Xiaohua's voice fell, our group immediately rushed towards the tent. We didn't care about the tent anymore, and quickly grabbed our equipment packs and put them on our backs. In my haste, I grabbed my own equipment, and with my right hand, I pulled up the German who was still sleeping on the ground. He was dazed after being pulled up.

Xiu Xiu reacted quickly too, as soon as she saw us like this, without saying a word, she also grabbed an equipment and ran, surprisingly even faster than me.

We rushed out of the tent and started running forward, all five wolf eyes lit up, illuminating the road ahead. Just then, a chorus of wolf howls erupted from behind me. I hastily turned my head back to see that those things had actually caught up with us. The dense, emerald green glow emanating from the darkness was radiating an eerie light.

I was already no match for Xiaohua and the others in terms of physical strength, and now I had a stumbling German in tow, so after just a few steps, I fell behind. When I looked up again, all I saw in the distance was a blurry light from the flashlights. At this critical moment, even Sanba ran faster than me. Dammit, these people must be rabbits or something!

I was running with the German guy, panting and out of breath from the previous lap. The ground beneath my feet was all ice, and suddenly I slipped and fell, feeling a sharp pain on my face. My nose hurt so much it felt sour. At that moment, I didn't care about the pain, I immediately started crawling up, but that German guy just sat down on the ground and refused to move.

I was so anxious that I turned my head back, and suddenly my scalp felt numb. Those strange wolf packs were only over a hundred meters away from me. At their speed, they could run to my side with just one dash.

But they have stopped for the moment, stopping a hundred meters away, slowly starting to shrink the encirclement circle. Apparently, this pack of wolves wants to get rid of me and the German first, and then have a big feast.

I watched them shrink the encirclement circle, gritted my teeth and picked up the gun. Fortunately, I had a sudden inspiration earlier when grabbing equipment, threw away the single tube and replaced it with a small assault rifle, otherwise at this moment there would be nothing to rely on.

The pack of wolves gradually approached, and their faces also became clearer. I found that their fangs were longer than those of ordinary wolves, yellow and exposed outside their lips. If they bite down with one mouthful, how can I survive?

But in an instant, the wolf at the very front let out a howl and pounced on me.

A pack of wolves is an organized animal, when hunting, the wolf king stays behind and commands the overall situation from the periphery. A deputy wolf leads the pack to hunt, now this wolf that pounces on me is obviously at the deputy wolf level, just don't know where their wolf king is hiding.

That wolf was dodging and weaving on the ice, completely unpredictable. I fired as it pounced, but several shots in a row missed.

When the first shot was fired, the wolf pack retreated in surprise at the sound of the gun, and the deputy wolf also stopped its charging motion. Its cold gaze fell on the ice surface that had been hit by the bullet, where the ice had shattered into a spider web-like shape in front of the wolf pack.

The deputy wolf's gaze, which was as cold as a forest, gave me an illusion that it was a thinking wolf, because its eyes were completely unlike those of an animal, but rather closer to a human-like yet inhuman gaze, making my scalp feel numb.

I gritted my teeth and took advantage of the wolf's momentary distraction to raise my gun, not even bothering to aim. I raised the gun and fired a burst, but at that very moment, the wolf suddenly vanished from before my eyes.

  Yes, it's gone.

At this time, although there was no light, the wolf was originally very close to me. Under the night color, it wasn't completely blurry, but just as I raised my gun and swept it, it suddenly disappeared without any reason.

My bullets had only fired four or five rounds before I had to stop, the wolf pack in the distance had retreated very far, they seemed to understand that the thing in my hand could kill at a distance, and they retreated just out of range of my small assault rifle, several hundred meters away, under the cover of night, all that could be seen were their green eyes.

That strange wolf suddenly disappeared, I couldn't make a judgment and couldn't figure out what was going on, but obviously, now is not the time to think about this. I pulled the German man up and turned around to run, the pack of wolves behind us immediately chased after us.

The German walked very slowly, stumbled and fell after a few steps, and I also stumbled under my feet, but fortunately I managed to steady myself and didn't fall.

At this point, I really wanted to shoot him and run away, but it's also my fault for not being able to do such a thing. My eyes were red with anxiety, so I could only pull him up again and we ran off together.

The wolf pack behind was getting closer and closer, but they didn't rush up all at once, as if they were afraid of something, just following me from a distance. I don't know how long I ran, only feeling extremely out of breath, although my high-altitude reaction wasn't strong, this intense sprint still made my heart ache.

Gradually, I was having trouble keeping up with the German's hand, this guy had his hands tied behind his back and running became even more clumsy. At this moment, I didn't care about that much anymore, while running, one hand fumbled behind him to untie him, as soon as he was untied, he accelerated, instead of holding my hand and running forward, I was stunned, a strange feeling rose in my heart.

The feeling hadn't sunk in yet, when the German turned his head and smiled at me, his loose skin pulled upwards, like a ghost. But those bright green eyes of his were very clear, where was the crazy look?

I suddenly realized, damn it, this German has been pretending all along!

He was in top physical condition, and there was no sign of clumsiness anywhere. A pair of large hands grasped my wrists and ran forward, to the point where I was almost being dragged along. At this moment, my heart was aching severely, I couldn't catch my breath, my mind was a complete blank, unable to think about anything, and all I could hear in my ears were the sounds of wind and the howling of wolves behind me.

In the distance, I saw two roads ahead, one was a straight extension forward, and the other was a downhill road, probably a large ice crack formed by geological movement, forming a grand canyon.

At this time, drilling into the canyon is equivalent to seeking death. I quickly called out: "Go, go... front... face." The words were no longer coherent. The German didn't know if he could understand Chinese, but he was obviously not stupid and didn't head in the direction of the canyon. Instead, he grabbed my hand and kept running forward, but after a few steps, he suddenly stopped his feet. I didn't stop in time, and my whole body fell to the ground.

As soon as I stopped, I couldn't help but take a deep breath. Before I could catch my breath, I raised my head, panting, and the scene in front of me left me stunned. I've encountered many bizarre scenes during my adventures, but this one made my head numb.

In front of the road, as far as the eye can see, a lone wolf stands upright.

But this lone wolf was no ordinary wolf, its body shape was at least twice as large as the wolf pack behind it, and it was even more majestic than an African lion. The most crucial thing was that this wolf closed its eyes, its long hair blown upright by the wind, but I felt as if its cold gaze was constantly circling around me.

On the wolf's forehead, there was a red line, bright and eye-catching. In the dim light of night, it was surprisingly clear. Suddenly, I thought of a legend about the Qilin's roar.

The wolf's lifespan is only over thirty years, but some wolves live longer for various reasons and gradually open their third eye. This eye grows on the forehead, and it won't easily open, but once this eye opens, just by looking at you, no matter if it's a person or an animal, grass or stone, it will immediately disappear without a trace, then appear in another place.

This wolf has become a spirit, generally hiding in the deep mountains and old forests. In the legends of the older generation, as long as the time for cultivation is reached, it will let out a loud roar and transform into a Qilin. Therefore, this kind of wolf with a red mark on its forehead is said to be its third eye, which is also known as the Qilin's roar.

As for the third eye of Qilin, there is a more frightening legend. It is said that... the eye is connected to Avīci Hell, and anyone who is stared at by that eye will die instantly and become a walking corpse. The wolf was closing its eyes at this moment, but I always felt that there was a third eye staring at me, just then, another wolf walked out from behind the first one.

He was two heads shorter than me, but a pair of eyes that shone with a piercing green light shot straight at me.

My heart skipped a beat, it was actually that wolf!

It suddenly disappeared and then suddenly appeared in front of me, what's going on?

Could it be... that legend about eyes is true?
